Ebook About From the acclaimed author of The Jungle: The first in a Pulitzer Prize–winning historical saga about the son of an American arms dealer during WWI. Lanning “Lanny” Budd spends his first thirteen years in Europe, living at the center of his mother’s glamourous circle of friends on the French Riviera. In 1913, he enters a prestigious Swiss boarding school and befriends Rick, an English boy, and Kurt, a German. The three schoolmates are privileged, happy, and precocious—but their world is about to come to an abrupt and violent end. When the gathering storm clouds of war finally burst, raining chaos and death over the continent, Lanny must put the innocence of youth behind him; his language skills and talent for decoding messages are in high demand. At his father’s side, he meets many important political and military figures, learns about the myriad causes of the conflict, and closely follows the First World War’s progress. When the bloody hostilities eventually conclude, Lanny joins the Paris Peace Conference as the assistant to a geographer asked by President Woodrow Wilson to redraw the map of Europe. Perfect for fans of The Winds of War, World’s End is the magnificent opening chapter of a monumental series that brings the first half of the twentieth century to vivid life. A thrilling mix of history, adventure, and romance, the Lanny Budd Novels are a testament to the breathtaking scope of Upton Sinclair’s vision and his singular talents as a storyteller.Book World's End (The Lanny Budd Novels Book 1) Review :
The Lanny Budd series is a socialist's recounting in a fictional format the events, mostly in Europe, from before the First War thru the start of the Cold War. The protagonist impinges in various ways on many of the seminal people of this period in the arts, politics, philosophy, rich, poor, famous, and infamous. He will interact with Isadora Duncan, Giacomo Matteotti, Mussolini, Zaharoff, Hitler, FDR, Harry Hopkins, Stalin, Hurst, and others. Much of the narrative is wound around historical events without affecting them. The reader is encouraged to be an observer not a participant. The hardest part of this series is the pacing and style. The pacing is slow and affected by the writers desire to show the socialist philosophy in the best possible light albeit espoused by human beings. The style is very much of novels produced in the teens and twenties of the 20th century and feels stilted to a current reader. Much tell rather than show. These books are worth slogging thru if only for the sometimes microscopic view of the period between the wars in Europe and the genesis of current socialist thought. The price of the Kindle editions is outrageous and the reader will be well serve to find second hand paperbacks or wait until the Kindle price is dropped to the more reasonable $2.99 that 2 of the books have been offered at. The author’s technique of injecting detailed literary descriptions of manners and mores and surroundings is a first entertaining, then interesting, and eventually a little tedious. Lanny’s progression from youth to young man is used as an excuse to combine actual history with conflicting opinions, with the luxury of 100% hindsight. I kept putting the book down for long periods and then almost forcing myself to come back and read, almost as a duty, rather than through pleasure. I’ll probably eventually tackle the next book (I have the complete series), but only after losing myself in some mindless pleasurable distraction first.
